Redirecting user to paynow

Hi All
l cant seem to follow the documentation well.can someone assist me on how to send a client to paynow to make a payment and then l get the status and or method of payment etc so that l can save them on my database. am not sure how the return and result URL works i.e if they are required to accomplish what am trying to achieve.
